The Ekaterinburg Expo 2020 in Russia is a national priority for the country.
The Ekaterinburg Expo would build on and in many ways serve as the culmination of the long-term international outreach and friendship building campaign Russia developed through the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup, creating a sequence of global events across a six-year period that would give Ekaterinburg 2020 unprecedented visibility in the years leading up to its celebration.
Expo 2020 Ekaterinburg «Global mind» theme presentation on 151th General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions:
The concept of "globalization" affects nearly every corner of the world. Indeed, modern technologies have "shrunk" the corners of the Earth. However, three-quarters of the world lack online access. Left behind by the electronic revolution, they are unable to share their experiences, their lives, their cultures, their dreams. Ten students from Russia want to change that.
With support from the Ekaterinburg Expo 2020 Bid Committee, a city trying to win the rights to host the World Expo in 2020 under the theme "The Global Mind," these students have gone from Ekaterinburg (Russia's fourth largest city straddling the border of Europe and Asia) to four far-flung countries (Panama, Namibia, Indonesia, and Mongolia). During the summer 2012, the student teams spent time in four remote villages where there was virtually no existing communication link with the "rest of the world."
These adventurous students installed internet connections through satellite connections and provided computers to the residents. Now these villagers can communicate among themselves, with their newfound friends (the student team from Ekaterinburg) and with the rest of the world. Thanks to The Global Mind Adventure, they are discovering other communities, and sharing their own culture.
On November 22, the latest presentation of Russia’s bid to host the World Universal Exposition in Ekaterinburg in 2020 was delivered at the 152nd BIE General Assembly:
